There's a great difference in size between a mid-sized pumpkin and a large one. Most families would choose to buy the mid-sized pumpkins, while the large pumpkins would be bought by those in the hospitality services industry.
This 80 pound pumpkin needs two grown men to carry it.
KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with Halloween, the Bangsar Village shopping mall has imported a 36kg pumpkin worth RM599 from the United States.
Mall manager Wang Zhizhong told (Guang Ming Daily) that the pumpkin, called "Big Mac", needed the strength of two men to carry it.
Wang revealed this was the third year the mall had imported a large pumpkin and put it up for sale.
However, last year's pumpkin was heavier than this year's by about nine kilogrammes, weighing in at around 45kgs.
Wang said if the pumpkin could not be sold, it would be left on display until October 31.
He said most consumers would pick the medium sized pumpkins that cost about RM100.
The large pumpkin would probably be purchased by those in the hospitality sector as the industry needed a larger supply of pumpkin compared to households.
After the flesh from the pumpkin had been extracted, the rind could be carved into a decoration, killing two birds with one stone.
Wang said because of the limited demand for the pumpkins, the company would only bring in 30 medium-sized pumpkins and a single large pumpkin each year.
The company sees foreigners as important customers for its vegetable market. By selling pumpkins during the Halloween period, the foreign customers could be made to feel more at home.
However, Wang added the mall was not just importing pumpkins for the sake of foreigners. Malaysians would be interested in the "Big Mac" too.
"Malaysians rarely get a chance to see a 36kg pumpkin.
"If they come across one in a shopping mall, they probably wouldn't be able to resist touching it or having their picture taken with it," he said.
