BUTTERWORTH: A Pinang tree has become the center of attraction because of a strange "face" growing on one of its' fronds.

Nearby residents seized the opportunity and set up stalls selling photos of the tree with its "face" at RM2 per copy. Although there were many curious onlookers, most believed that it was a natural occurrence. They think it is simply a coincidence that the growth on the Pinang tree so closely resembled the contours of a human face.

According to one of the onlookers, the phenomenon was caused by fruit growing from the Pinang tree, and has nothing to do with tree spirits.

A local resident said that the phenomenon had appeared about a month ago, now the frond is already becoming yellowed. In another two months, the frond will be shed naturally.

The large crowd of onlookers transformed the normally tranquil village, giving it a carnival air.
