DRESDEN: In order to catch a rapist, German police are preparing to test the DNA of 100,000 men in the city. This will be the most large-scale DNA comparison test ever conducted by a police force in an attempt to capture a criminal.
The rapist only targets underaged girls. From September last year to January this year, the rapist left behind DNA samples during two separate incidents where a 9 year old and an 11 year old girl were raped in Dresden.
To track down the rapist, the police are preparing to perform DNA comparison tests on the men who have lived in the area where the rapes occurred during the period of time that the crimes took place.
The DNA test will involve a maximum of 100,000 men. It is believed to be the largest scale DNA comparison test ever conducted by the police in the course of an investigation. However, the police know that if the rapist isn’t a local, then the DA tests will not produce any useful results.
German police had previously conducted a smaller-scale DNA comparison test. When an infant was murdered, police compared the DNA of 18,000 men and successfully managed to apprehend the killer. Scientists say that everyone’s DNA is different. The chance of two people having the exact same DNA is 1 in 5 million. As such, DNA testing is an important tool for solving criminal cases.
