Eyes Wide Shut: Young Siblings See With Eyes Closed

  • The blindfolded children easily identify the colours the reporter uses on a piece of paper.

  • Despite being blindfolded, Jiecong flawlessly repeats every word on the reporter's IC.

  • While blindfolded, Jiecong pours himself a glass of water without spilling a single drop of it.

BUTTERWORTH: Qiu Jiecong, 10 (Standard 4), and Qiu PeiJin, 8 (Standard 2), have an extraordinary ability. They can "see" things blindfolded or with their eyes shut. The two siblings even claim that learning is easier when they study with their eyes covered.

Qiu Jiecong said it was far easier to study and do his homework with his eyes closed. His memory is also significantly improved.

"It's like there's another pair of eyes on my forehead. Sometimes, during a school test, I'll secretly close my eyes. I can finish a maths test more easily and quickly with my eyes shut than open."

They learned this amazing ability after taking part in an 11-hour long "Accelerated Memory Course" last year.

A local secondary school teacher developed the course after conducting 20 years of research. The course emphasises building up a child's concentration, attention and confidence. This stimulates the mind, increasing its power and unlocking its hidden potential. So long as a child can stay 100% focused, he or she can actually "see" using brainwaves.

Not Everyone Can Have This Ability

During an interview, course supervisor Lin Zi Yi said, "This ability to see with the eyes closed is a natural, innate talent. With the right kind of training, a child could learn to 'see' with their eyes closed more clearly than if they had their eyes open."

However, not every student taking the course will have this ability.

Read Out Details On Reporter's IC

To verify the siblings' claims, the reporter conducted several tests. The first was to have them read out the reporter's IC number, name and address while blindfolded, which they did flawlessly.

During the interview, the siblings also demonstrated how they could play and move about freely even with their eyes covered.

To further test their ability, the reporter coloured a piece of paper with several different colours. The siblings managed to identify the colours chosen by the reporter without much difficulty.

In another test, the reporter held out a RM50 note, and the two children managed to accurately "read" the serial number on it without using their eyes.

Taught Not To Abuse Abilities

To prevent the two children from misusing their abilities to con others, their mother Xu Suyin frequently talks to them about what is right and what is wrong. She also arranges for them to perform during charity fundraisers so that they can help others with their gift.
