Windfall From "Lucky" Coffee Shop

  • Yan Ya Ying and her assistant can't stop smiling when they talk about how the money was blown into the shop.

  • Bahau's "Hou Yuen Coffee Shop" lived up to its name.

BAHAU: The "Hou Yuen (which means 'lucky' in Cantonese) Coffee Shop" in one of Bahau's commercial districts lived up to its name on Sunday. Customers there literally received an unexpected windfall when a bag full of banknotes just dropped in out of the blue.

The incident occurred at Hou Yuen Coffee Shop around 7.00 a.m. At that time, there were more than 10 customers in the coffee shop enjoying their breakfast, when the wind suddenly blew a plastic bag into the shop. When the bag hit the ground, a bunch of banknotes came fluttering out!

Even though they had no idea where the notes came from, the customers did not hesitate to capitalise on their good fortune and pick up the money.

Ya Yan Ling, 38, who runs a noodle stall at the coffee shop, managed to pick up a RM10 note. At first she thought it was a bag full of trash, but was stunned when the bag burst open and the paper notes came flying out.

Possibly Earnings of a Night Market Vendor

Bala, 24, an Indian roti seller at the coffee shop, managed to gather RM11 from the wind-blown notes. He said he never knew picking up money could be so exciting.

According to his estimate, at least RM300 in paper notes had been blown into the shop by the wind.

The money is believed to have come from the night market area. A night market had been held on Saturday (3rd June), and a vendor probably left his earnings behind, which the wind blew towards the coffee shop.
