LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES: A man who allegedly plotted to smuggle three million dollars worth of stolen wedding dresses from the United States into Mexico has been arrested by customs agents, officials said Wednesday (November 7th).
A statement by prosecutors in southwestern Arizona state said Alejandro Parra-Ruiz, 32, was nabbed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers after an associate was caught with the truckload of bridal gowns in April.
The arrest of driver Ivan Mesa-Esparza led agents to Parra-Ruiz, who was caught after a sting operation, the statement said.
The wedding dresses had been stolen from the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation in November 2006, which had been due to put them up for auction. The dresses were returned to the charity after they were recovered.
Parra-Ruiz faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a 250,000 dollar fine if convicted of smuggling.
