TV worker strikes 266-million-dollar jackpot

LOS ANGELES, May 6 (AFP) - A woman worker at a Los Angeles television station and her husband struck it lucky to win the 266-million-dollar jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery draw, reports said Wednesday.

The lucky winner has not been formally identified but colleagues at NBC4 television confirmed a female newsroom employee working an overnight shift at the station had scooped the bumper payday.

The woman had arrived for her shift early to fax resumes on behalf of her husband, who had recently lost his job, colleagues said.

After discovering she and her husband had struck the jackpot -- which entitles the couple to a one-off payment of roughly half of 266 million dollars or annual payments for 25 years -- woman burst into tears.

"She started crying," co-worker Nicole Stevenson told the station.

Another colleague, David Reese, said he was at home sleeping when the woman called him to tell him the news.

"My phone rang at about 2:30 this morning," Reese told Channel 4. "Out of a dead sleep and she called and said, 'Are you sitting down?' And I said, 'I'm laying down, I was asleep.'"

Despite a payday that will ensure she and her husband never have to work again, the newly minted multi-millionaire completed her entire overnight shift.

The restaurant which sold the ticket will receive a half of one percent of the winnings, roughly 1.3 million dollars.

NBC4 reported the couple bought the ticket from the Hawaiian Barbecue restaurant in the suburb of Pico Rivera after a disagreement over where to get their food. She had wanted to go to a Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet.

The odds of matching the winning numbers were 1 in 175,711,536, according to the Mega Millions website.
