PENANG: Since the flowers of Epiphyllum oxypetalum, also known as "Night Blooming Cereus", may take a year to bloom but they bloom only over a single night, not many people have seen them, not to mention an Epiphyllum oxypetalum fruit.
A Night Blooming Cereus in Balik Pulau here surprised its owner when it bloomed a white flower and bore its first purplish red fruit in seven years.
The plant's owner Luo Sujin, 63, said when she shared her joy with Guang Ming Daily that her son bought her the plant seven years ago. It bloomed flowers but never bore fruit over all these years.
Two weeks ago, she found a betel nut-sized fruit grew from the plant. The purplish red-skinned fruit looked just like a dragon fruit but it tasted sour.
She hoped that the unexpected fruit could bring her and her family good luck. (Translated by SOONG PHUI JEE/ Guang Ming Daily)
