BAHAU (Negeri Sembilan): An English teacher of a tutorial centre recently brought her students out of their classroom to learn kitchen appliance terms in a shop.

English teacher Li Peiyun brought 11 students aged from five to eight years old to a shop so that they could buy gifts for their mothers and at the same time, learn the terms of kitchen appliances.

The group attracted the attention of shoppers when they entered the shop.

Li said that they were suppose to learn kitchen appliances on that day and she decided to bring them out to shop so that they could learn the terms and at the same time, buy something for their mothers.

She said that each student was given RM10 to buy something within 10 minutes. After they had made the purchase, they were required to gather at the front door of the shop and show what they had bought.

The students followed her instructions and 10 minutes later, they were showing Li what they had bought for their mothers. They bought spatulas, knives, chopsticks, ladles, plates, bowls, cups, spoons and teaspoons. However, two students also bought pepper and soy sauce. As they were food ingredients and not kitchen appliances, Li asked them the reasons.

The five-year-old student said that they were out of pepper when his mother was cooking lately and thus, he wanted to buy her some. Meanwhile, the six-year-old student said in shame that he had incautiously broken the glass bottle and spilled the soy sauce. Therefore, he was buying another bottle for his mother to show his regret. After listening to their reasons, Li did not scold them but praised them for being honest.
